User kicks out IBM, Dell and brings in Cisco

Cisco almost didn't make the cut. NightHawk Radiology Services was ready to hand its data center consolidation project to another vendor until a facility leasing issue delayed its decision. That gave Cisco an opportunity to pitch its Unified Computing System (UCS) proposal to the lab and in the end NightHawk will replace 120 physical IBM and Dell server blades with 18 UCS servers

Defcon: Hacking Tire Pressure Monitors Remotely by Jamey Heary

I attended an interesting talk at Defcon today that revealed a potential security vulnerability that I never would have thought of in a million years. Yep, hacking the tire pressure monitoring system in your car. The talk called "Letting the Air out of tire pressure monitoring systems" was by Mike Metzger. Turns out the attack surface for such an attack is huge. In the U.S. the Tread Act mandated that every car built after 2007 must have a tire pressure monitoring system built-in. It also...

Cisco Q4 looking good by Jim Duffy

Cisco fourth quarter sales are ahead of expectations, according to investment firm Oppenheimer & Co. During its quarterly "channel check" of 37 US and European resellers, Oppenheimer found that data center demand, upgrade activity and reignited projects are boosting business for Cisco in the quarter.Cisco is not slowed by the economic malaise in Europe and spending held steady as well, Oppenheimer noted in a bulletin on its findings. And things look good heading into Cisco's FY 2011 too:As... 1

Dell's Security Opportunity by Jon Oltsik

This week, Dell announced its entry into the SMB security market with a portfolio of products and services. The initial portfolio is fairly simple, with Dell partnering with others for endpoint security, network security, and security services. There is no shortage of vendors in the security space, but I believe Dell has an opportunity here. Security issues don't discriminate by organizational size -- small companies have to have the same type of protection that larger ones do. That said,... 1

B is for Botnets by Julie Bort

Today Our Cool Tools Blogger Keith Shaw launched a new video series, "The ABCs of IT." It stars I.T. Jinglehopper (but Keith says you can call him Neal for short) and his sidekick/intern Jackson. The two will explain the alphabet of IT terms and hopefully provide some entertainment along the way. Ok, this is silly stuff. But for those of you who want an easy way to explain to your kids (and maybe your parents) what you do for a living, this series might be just the ticket, or the show, or... 2

Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent win AT&T IP domain by Jim Duffy

As expected, AT&T this week named Cisco among its three suppliers for the carrier's IP/MPLS network "domain." The other two are Juniper and Alcatel-Lucent.We reported in March that this would be the likely scenario. In an effort to whittle down the number of suppliers it works with, AT&T is selecting two vendors - well, three in this case - as its suppliers for certain areas, or "domains," of its service network.Cisco, Juniper and Alcatel-Lucent will supply routers and switches for the... 4

Juniper secures Cisco Cius OS by Jim Duffy

Juniper can now secure Cisco's new Cius tablet thanks to an acquisition it made this week. Cisco's rival announced plans to acquire SMobile, a developer of security software for tablets and smartphones, for $70 million.Among the mobile operating systems SMobile secures from viruses, spyware, identity theft and other threats is Android, the foundation of the Cisco Cius. SMobile also supports Apple's iOS - not the other IOS - on iPhones and iPads, Symbian, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile...

Cisco responds to Black Hat's Million Router Hacker by Jim Duffy

Cisco has posted a blog entry in response to the talk being delivered this week at Black Hat on hacking millions of consumer routers. We blogged on this talk two weeks ago. Basically, the presenter claims that a DNS rebinding technique can be used by an attacker to infiltrate the router and take control of a user's Web browser to invade internal files and applications. The technique makes Cisco Linksys WRT routers vulnerable, as well as those from ActionTec, Asus, Belkin, Dell and... 4

    Peer-to-Peer Security by Jon Oltsik

Traditional security solutions are sort of like client/server computing. Security vendors take the role of the server, hosting the master software, adding new anti-malware signatures, and distributing them to all of the clients. This model was adequate in the past but it is no longer good enough. Why? Malware volume stresses the system and all too common zero-day attacks have free and clear access to sitting duck systems. Coping with the new threat landscape means embracing a new... 1

Cisco best positioned for business tablet computing? by Jim Duffy

If tablet computing takes off in the enterprise, is Cisco best positioned to capitalize on it? That's the assertion posed by Motley Fool in this piece entitled "The Titan of Tablets: Apple or Cisco?"In it, Fool notes that, on the heels of the Apple iPhone's success in the corporate world, iPhone service provider AT&T notes an uptick in interest for business tablet computing as well. Tablets like the Apple iPad can be used for very specific, slimmed down computing tasks that do not require... 5

A bet on BBCs and VM Mobility by Douglas Gourlay

Last week a friend from work bet me I couldn't write an intelligible blog about 'BBCs.' As usual, without thinking too much, I took the bet. So a BBC- British Broadcasting Corporation? Nah, hard to write about customers and you don't want to violate anyone's NDA or security posture. So how about the fabled and storied "Bailey's Banana Creme Colada" from Cyril's Fish House in Amagansett, New York? What the heck, why not... Cyril's is a Fish House on the side of the road, pretty good food... 2
